Konstantin Grcic and the designer chairs at the boutique hotel in Fiss
13 January 2019

At Hotel Gebhard in Fiss, Tyrol, some of his designer chairs stand in our rooms. We value his design for its clear, minimalist lines, which fit into quiet corners of the hotel.
Konstantin Grcic's path to design
Konstantin Grcic was born in Munich in 1965. He completed a cabinetmaking apprenticeship at the John Makepeace School in Dorset, England, and then studied design at the Royal College of Art in London. Training as a furniture maker teaches direct handling of materials, joints and the practical making of furniture. This craft foundation suits a view of furniture in which construction and use come first. After graduating in 1990 he worked for a year in Jasper Morrison's studio. In 1991 he founded his own office in Munich. Today Konstantin Grcic Design is based in Berlin. Since 2020 he has held a professorship at the Hochschule für bildende Künste Hamburg, and in 2021 he became a member of the Akademie der Künste Berlin.
Minimalist design and the role of function
Grcic designs industrial products that can be called reduced, simple and minimalist. What sets him apart from many others is that his products are defined by function. That means the form arises from use. An object is designed so that it fulfils its purpose clearly, without superfluous elements or decorative additions. The construction follows what is needed for use. The lines stay clear and the appearance stays simple. This attitude runs through his work as an industrial designer. He has developed furniture, products and lights for leading companies. His clients include Magis, Plank, Flos and Vitra. Other names from his circle are Agape, Authentics, ClassiCon, Driade, Iittala, Krups, Lamy, Moormann, Moroso, Muji and Whirlpool.
Designer chairs and award-winning work
Many of his designs have won renowned design prizes. The Mayday light for Flos received the Compasso d'Oro in 2001, the Myto chair for Plank in 2011. One example is Chair_One for Magis. This chair has a die-cast aluminium shell made up of many small perforated triangular surfaces. Solutions like this show how Grcic combines construction and looks. The designer chairs appear light and clear, yet remain clearly oriented towards use.

They set accents in individual areas without dominating the room. Anyone who knows Konstantin Grcic's work recognises in these pieces the same commitment to reduction and function that shapes his entire output.
