Flora Vulgaris butter knife and sugar spoon by Roos Van de Velde

10 April 2019

Knives, forks and spoons on a linen cloth beside a white vase

I have admired the artist Roos Van de Velde for years, and after her collaboration with Serax, a Belgian family company that beautifies the home with internationally known artists, I had to have these knives. I take fresh pleasure in them every day. Roos Van de Velde's creations are inevitably connected with nature. The name Flora Vulgaris alludes to the wild, intuitive way the cutlery took its shape. The forks resemble branching twigs, the spoons look like endless leaf shapes and the knives are like razor clams. The combination of colours, material, form and play of lines is a perfect complement to the Perfect Imperfection collection.

Roos Van de Velde

Roos Van de Velde is a Flemish-Belgian visual artist and ceramicist. Nature runs through her designs. She was among the first to see imperfection, chance and the traces of the making process as a central part of beauty.

Perfect Imperfection

Perfect Imperfection is a collection of tableware and vases by Roos Van de Velde for Serax from 2012. In this series imperfection, the unfinished and chance were not only allowed but wanted. That was a real challenge for Serax.

Flora Vulgaris

Flora Vulgaris is cutlery by Roos Van de Velde, made by Serax from brushed stainless steel. It includes a butter knife and a sugar spoon. The same attitude to form continues in the cutlery collection. Organic shapes and subtle contours show her connection with nature.

Serax

Serax is a company from Antwerp. Since 1986 in Belgium it has grown from a collection of flowerpots into an international platform for contemporary design. Despite years of design experience, the collaboration with Roos Van de Velde was new ground for Serax in more than one respect.
