Hand-thrown plates and mugs by Hansjörg Kathrein
11 April 2019

Our various individual ceramic plates and mugs were handmade by the artist Hansjörg Kathrein from Fiss. We ran a one-year trial so the crockery would stand up to the heavy use of a restaurant. The special glaze, the very high firing temperature of 1,240 degrees and the very slow cooling make the ceramic both very hard and elastic. Thank you, Hansjörg, for the great collaboration over the years. From the coming 2019/20 winter season the plates and mugs will also be available in the new Gebhard shop at Hotel Gebhard in Fiss.
Hansjörg Kathrein
Hansjörg Kathrein was born and grew up in Fiss. Love took him to Innsbruck. On 1 October 2022 the Kathrein pottery studio became the Töpferei Kathrein in Innsbruck at Viaduktbogen 1. The pottery's website speaks of 40 years of craftsmanship from Innsbruck. Since 1 October 2022 Hansjörg's son-in-law Stefan has run the workshop, and Hansjörg stays connected to it. Hansjörg holds courses in Patsch, and there is an open workshop for throwing and glazing.
Stoneware and firing
The pottery works with stoneware. The clay is fired at around 1200 degrees into a dense, robust body.
Glazes
The glazes are smooth, glossy, high-fired and hygienic. The pottery names quality before design as its principle and writes that its ceramics should stand up to the demands of the hospitality trade. Matt or vivid colours, especially reds, and on-glaze finishes like gold are, according to the pottery, hardly possible at this firing temperature.
